Monday, May 19, 2014

The world's most famous monster is pitted against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

The movie that has dived our show, on Facebook and on the upcoming show. I should start by saying this was not on my High 5 Summer Movies 2014 and I have not seen any of the previous incarnation. I truly went into this movie not expecting to really like it because of my hatred of Pacific Rim. I am glad I went because this is easily in my top 5 films of the year as of today. This is on of the best times I have in a theater in a while.

This movie definitely using the Jaws method of creature features by not giving us the monster in full until the end, however there are other monsters featured in the film. I like this approach more so than showing the full creature at the top of the movie. The really good creature/horror movies build the suspense, would Alien have been as scary if that build up was not there? The creature effects were fantastic as well. These are things that looked and felt real, unlike the disconnect I had for Pacific Rim. These creatures looked great even in the daylight.

It has been talked about before on the human characters and how they do not seem fully developed. I have to disagree, I believed this family from the first frame and the continuation of the family dynamic through out. Ken Watanabe's character was the only one I wish had more to do in the film, but you could understand where he was coming from. I do not need a long boring how did they get here set up for a movie like this. Even the creatures had a way uniquely theirs.

It goes with out saying the film work and special effects were amazing. The destruction was believable with in the context of this film. all the moving pieces fit beautifully. There is one scene in particular that really got to me. While the male creature was giving the nuclear bomb to the female i was just amazed that I felt I was in the street watching them in shock. Then I realized I would have been dead because of the destruction they caused coming down the street to bury me if I were actually there. The sound designers should get a nomination as well, it was great work to get that right roar for Godzilla and make it this movies own.

I should also add if you can watch this in IMAX, I think it adds to the picture. I was engrossed in this world from start to finish. I cared about these people, and for Godzilla. This is probably going to be my biggest surprise of the summer, I was really not expecting to like this at all. It won me over right at the beginning, and like Godzilla, it did not let go of me. It flew by and I am dying to see it again.
